AMAZING DISCOVERY ABOUT UPGRADING BAGS

I understand the 4.3 PTR just went live, and that there's a whole slew of new class balance changes and dungeon screenshots and achievements and spell icons and and and BUT THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT.

With people collecting gear for Transmogrification and 4.3's Void Storage tantalizingly close but not here yet, bag space has become an invaluable commodity. Yesterday I decided to finally upgrade Rades' bags, and made quite possibly THE MOST AMAZING DISCOVERY OF ALL TIME.

Note: I feel I should point out that I'm not saying this is anything new! But it was new, WONDERFUL, GLORIOUS news to me! ;)

I have no idea how long you've been able to do this. But judging from the reactions on Twitter when I started raving about this discovery, there's plenty of other players who didn't know about it either! SO NOW YOU KNOW! :D

This feature was cribbed from Rift.

Not that there's anything wrong with doing that...

I've been doing this with bag addons like ArkInventory since TBC, so presumably it was one of Blizzard's many instances of taking good ideas from the addon community and incorporating them into their games. So it didn't come from Rift at all :P

Anyway, grats on your good news Rades ;)

I don't want to downplay your truly awesome discovery but... I'm fairly sure this has been around for a long time :) Perhaps it was an addon doing it for me...?

Heh, yes, it's been around a very long time.. or perhaps it was an addon..
what I like more was that when you find a bag as a newbie alt it auto equips it for you, so if you don't notice you've looted one, it doesn't matter :)

WOW! Seven years of playing WoW, and I never knew that!

That is a truly miraculous discovery!

I use Bagnon, so moving things into other bags was still smoother, but it still took a lot of time... but this...? Holy crap!

There's also a fabby bag search item that helpfully greys out everything in your bags that doesn't meet your terms.

    No more bag blindness :D

Been there a long time, Rades old chap. You just can't replace a bag when the new bag is located inside the one you're replacing.

Although I've known about this one for a while too, I think this leads onto a great blog topic in general ... what did you discover in Warcraft that you'd never known about before?? How many of us have made these little discoveries and thought 'OMG! This is amazing!' and then wondered who else doesn't know about it? Share the knowledge!

No no no, this can't have happened that long ago. I would have noticed. Not that all my bags are ever full though, unlike captain RP gear here.

haha I cracked up at this post XD

I knew about swapping out bags with it's full, but the post was hilarious nonetheless. :P

Been around a long time. Not "borrowed" from Rift. If memory serves, I've been doing this since BC when I was making Netherweave bags.

Also not an addon. I don't use bag addons.

Funny...I have no idea how to play my toons or what spec to pick, but I knew this about bags. :P

Damn, there's a great line that's perfect for this, but because you're Canadian you wouldn't get it. ("Who's Paul Harvey?" you'd ask.)

Still, that's awesome. But I don't want to think about the amount of coding that had to go into reworking that stack.

    Fuck. My. Life.

So many hours spent running back and forth between the bank trying to juggle all the items I have (It's called Bag Overflow for a reason, ok?!?) Just to be able to do that. I..... feel........... broken, hollow inside. I think this is an excellent time to start drinking..... heavily.

Haha, thanks for comments all...I realize from feedback this feature has been around for a while! I've just never...discovered it before now, I guess! I added a disclaimer to the post that I'm not saying this is breaking news or anything. But I think the people who didn't know, like me, will be suitably overjoyed to learn of it! :D

Isn't this a great little trick?

I'm sure its been in the game since at least mid-way through WotLK, cause that's when I started using it. :)

You can do the same stuff with full-ish bank bags too. :)

Before I used a bag addon -- and, well, now that I don't use one -- I'd sort things by bag. I have a "raiding bag" and a "crafting bag" and a "pvp gear bag" and a "reputation currency bag," etc., regardless of empty slots in those.

Days when I'm not pvping, I used to keep my "pvp gear bag" in the bank and would swap it out for an emptier bag (but not totally empty bag), by doing the whole take-this-bag-&-put-it-on-top-of-the-other-bag's-icon maneuver.

Y'know, instead of having to take out all 17ish pieces of gear out one by one, I just swap bags. =P

I've never NOT known the bags to work that way. It has done this since late Wrath at least.

It doesn't work on all bags, btw. The gigantique and portable hole don't let you trade em for some reason...discovered that to my chagrin when I decided to go get the bag for the achievement. With a nearly full inventory. Half an hour later, I got it!

This has been around for a little while, but definitely not from the beginning. I'm not sure when it came in or when I discovered it...

Now, it tends to foul up if you are carrying the new bigger bag within the bag you intend to replace. This creates an infinite paradoxical loop and breaks the internet.

    Silly, silly Rades.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but there's something else to note about bag swapping. If you have a new bag, we'll call it Shiny Newness, sitting inside the old bag, Brown Lunch Sack, Shiny Newness will NOT replace the Brown Lunch Sack. Gotta scoot your Shiny Newness into some other random obscure bag in order to replace Brown Lunch Sack.

This information shall help you continue on enjoying your new found trick, instead of going "WTF?!?! The trick worked yesterday, what's wrong?!!? DID BLIZZ HOTFIX THIS?!?!"

Also, I'm not sure how you feel about bag addons, but I learned a new trick with ArkInventory...a trick that my boyfriend relentlessly picks on me for not knowing despite how long I've had the addon. In the top right hand corner of the gigantic bag (the addon makes it so that all your bags just look like one big bag when you open it/them) is a button that says "Restack". I hit that button on my priest and instantly had 6 more slots because she had materials that weren't stacked to their greatest potential. I'm now in love with hitting that button.

    Bags, they are mysterious beasties.
