Transmogrification: Non-tier plate sets
Everyone's been all astir about the recently-announced Transmogrifier feature that will be coming soon, and with good reason! Personally, I am beyond excited that I won't have to wear the horrible rust colors of Tier 12. This feature cannot arrive soon enough.
(Also, the irony of this feature, considering Fabulor's penchant for matching outfits and color-coordinated equipment at proper level is not lost on me.)
The big trend right now seems to be running old instances and heroics to get ye olde Tier sets. And some of the older sets - Paladin Judgement, anyone? - are unquestionably awesome! However, for us Death Knights, we don't have nearly as many options, and our Tier sets tend to be rather...similar. I also think this is a great opportunity for people to really customize their look and build an appearance that really fits their character. Why look like everyone else, after all?
Here's a few sets I threw together. Something important to note is that none of these pieces require a raid group or any crazy effort to acquire - most of them are from Cataclysm regular or Heroic-level dungeons, from Burning Crusade level bosses (easily soloable at 85, even on Heroic mode) or are purchasable with Justice Points. Remember, old equipment from past expansions can still be bought with JP! It's a perfect way to use up those excess points.
There are some items that appear to be listed twice, but this is because there is both a Normal and Heroic version that will work for transmog purposes.

Blue Steel
The nice thing about this set is that there are multiple options for almost every piece. In fact, there are almost too many options - it's kinda ridiculous. Most of the pieces are from Cataclysm dungeons.
The only slot that might be hard to obtain is the gloves, as two of the possible options are from Northrend quests, and the other two are random green-quality world drops. The alternate options are from Cataclysm quests/dungeon drops.

Full Troll
The Zulroic gear is pretty sweet, but it looks TERRIBLE when mixed with "normal" themed equipment. Fortunate for players who love the Troll aesthetic, you can still buy most of the original Troll pieces in Shattrath!
The only piece in the above picture that might be a pain to get are the boots, but you can buy near-identical thicker ones in Shattrath for a few hundred JP.
Helm:
Roaring Mask of Bethekk (above), Amani Mask of Death (390 JP, Shattrath. Slightly purple.)
Shoulders:
Pauldrons of Gruesome Fate (312 JP, Shattrath)
Back:
Cindercloth Cloak (Tailoring)
Chest:
Chestguard of the Stoic Guardian (390 JP, Shattrath)
Hands:
Furious Deathgrips (312 JP)
Waist:
Girdle of the Fearless (390 JP, Shattrath)
Legs:
High Justicar's Legplates (390 JP, Shattrath)
Feet:
Skullcrusher Warboots (Zul'Aman)
Alternate Feet (Thicker look):
Implacable Guardian Sabatons (312 JP, Shattrath), Sabatons of the Righteous Defender (312 JP, Shattrath)
Tabard:
Consortium Tabard, Ironforge Tabard, Mag'har Tabard, Scout's Tabard, Stone Guard's Herald
TOTAL: 2496 Justice Points
Royal Skull
This gear set (which uses Death Knight-specific PVP gear) emulates the traditional Stormwind look, with the blue, yellow and white color themes. It looks pretty good for Horde players too though.
The cloak and belt choices might be hard to get, but really any white or blue option would look fine.
Edit: Aw, I just realized the shoulders in this picture are Alliance-only. Boo! I've suggested some alternatives, below.
Helm:
Furious Gladiator's Dreadplate Helm (935 JP, Dalaran)
Shoulders:
Pauldrons of Trembling Rage (591 JP, Dalaran, Alliance-only)
Alternate Shoulders:
Pauldrons of Zul'Farrak, Pauldrons of the Thorium Brotherhood
(or any of the shoulders from "Blue Steel", above)
Back: Perfectly Balanced Cape (A), Shattershore Cloak (A), Shattershore Cloak (H), Shifting Cloak (Leatherworking)
Alternate Back:
Platinum Mesh Cloak (347 JP, Dalaran), Sentinel's Winter Cloak (579 JP, Dalaran), Thoriumweave Cloak (The Mechanar)
Chest:
Cobalt Chestpiece (Blacksmithing)
Hands:
Furious Gladiator's Dreadplate Gauntlets (591 JP, Dalaran)
Waist:
Borak's Belt of Bravery
Legs:
Special Issue Legplates (Argent Crusade - Honored)
Feet:
Vicious Gladiator's Warboots of Alacrity (1650 Honor Points)
Shirt: Tuxedo Shirt, White Linen Shirt
Tabard:
Argent Crusader's Tabard, Knight's Colors, Private's Colors, Stormwind Tabard, Tabard of the Argent Crusade

I've been dreaming & plotting my druid's outfits, but this could be the inspiration needed for my dk. Thank you so much for sharing! Love the alliance look featured in the last one for hordeside. And ditto on Ironyca's love of tabard matching too. Complete ensemble!

Mittenz
Blech @ that troll set. I need a nice green or turquoise troll set to go with Mittenz' colouring. I think some of the ZG stuff has good colouring.

Nice-looking sets. I very much like your focus on non-raid older gear, too! Way more accessible for us non-raiders.

Some great looking sets there! One more for Diversity!
I'm hoping to mix and match my own pieces to form my outfit.

I just love the Troll set, I just put it together for my DK, and she looks so awesome. I only need to add my head piece and I am done. Thanks for the great write up on plate sets.

Anyone have thoughts on a shield/sword that could go with the troll set? Or a 2 hander?
